ABSTRACT
As human beings, we are necessarily related and interdependent. Without each other we cannot survive, physically or emotionally. We depend on mutual support. All human life is communal to some extent and residential centres, when they are working well, are places where people can experience communal life at its best because they are given full opportunity-rare in the world outside-to organise themselves cooperatively with others.
