ABSTRACT

The dictionary describes self-esteem as ‘good opinion of oneself: self-respect — the extent to which we perceive ourselves to be worthwhile and capable human beings’. It is the judgement or view we hold about ourselves based on a whole lot of life experiences, and, although it can vary from time to time, each person has a level of self-esteem which they carry with them wherever they go and it is important because it can have a big influence on how people behave, react and learn. Self-esteem is about liking ourselves. It is linked to the feelings we have about our competence or ability in important parts of our life.
