ABSTRACT

In the last chapter, we saw how we can come to believe falsehoods, though our faculty for judging is perfect of its kind: here, I wish to consider more closely how the infinite will and the finite intellect interact to produce beliefs, and to pay more attention to what goes on when we encounter truths. Do we need the will to understand? Are we free in assenting to what is true? Can we refuse to assent to what we understand?
