ABSTRACT

Between 1950 and 1970, 83,600 local authority dwellings had been builtdouble the pre-war rate. The economy had begun to grow and emigration to slow down.

The 1970s saw a sharp change in Ireland’s fortunes. For the first time since records were kept, and probably since the Famine, Irish immigration outstripped emigration. Table 37.1 shows the reversal in the trend.
