ABSTRACT
The policy of glasnost (‘openness’ or ‘voicing’) metamorphosed the style and content of media reporting on Soviet society both within and beyond the USSR. Glasnost cannot, however, be simply equated with the liberal notion of the ‘freedom of the press’ but must be seen in its social and cultural context.
