ABSTRACT
The first AIDS cases were identified in June 1981. Although impressive gains have been made in our scientific knowledge of the AIDS virus since its discovery in 1983, no effective vaccine has been discovered. There is no treatment that can prevent the disease’s eventual fatal outcome. Although great progress has been made in treating the associated opportunistic diseases, preventing the transmission of HIV is currently and will continue to be for many years the only way to control this epidemic.
