ABSTRACT

Pure Strategy is more properly a philosophy of strategy than an historical or scientific investigation. It is an inquiry into the fundamental truth of strategy as defined above: its purpose, place, utility, and value. I recognize that this may seem an odd or circuitous way to impart the lessons and meaning of strategy, especially to military practitioners who must make decisions that will have strategic ramifications, but truth is an ideal that cannot be universally measured nor thunderously proclaimed. Implications and projections will be accepted only to the extent that the theory herein is consistent within itself, with experience, and to which it is persuasive. As such, it may prove frustrating to the military practitioner who sees that no manual for strategy, no doctrine for strategic design, is provided.
