ABSTRACT
This chapter considers in more detail the role of central government in urban policy. It begins by considering ‘inner-city policy’, the specific measures that central governments have taken to pursue urban regeneration. This is followed by a case study of training and enterprise councils (TECs). The chapter concludes by reviewing the ‘new public management’ which has been introduced both into central government’s own departments and into its many executive agencies created to implement national policy locally.
