ABSTRACT
Clearly, people’s experience of housing and homelessness affects virtually every aspect of their social well-being. The recent discussions on social exclusion have become increasingly important to housing policy and practice. It is clear that both market forces and public policy have failed to satisfy the essential needs of many households, not least the need for decent and affordable housing. This chapter:
• examines some of the various definitions of social exclusion; • discusses the production and distribution of housing; • explores the concept of poverty and its relation to social exclusion; • analyses public policy and practice in relation to social exclusion; and • concludes by examining neighbourhood management and self-help.
