ABSTRACT

The role of grandparents in children’s learning is a neglected area of research, but as the authors of this chapter, members of a research team at Goldsmith’s College, University of London, discovered, their contribution is worth further consideration. Grandparents often have a close and special relationship with their grandchildren and the research team found many examples of them involved in a range of learning events in the home, where the grandparents sensitively joined with children in a process of discovery or shared their knowledge and experience. Schools may wish to consider how they could extend their notions of partnership to include grandparents and other family members.
