ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a focus on rights and responsibilities at school and the importance of trust to respecting the rights of others. Pupils consider the function of rules at school, and laws in the wider society, as being primarily about protecting our rights. They progress to reflecting on the nature of being human and, therefore, of the nature of human rights. They find out about the content and purpose of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, how human rights have been and are being abused in some parts of the world and the organisations and personalities who take positive action for human rights.
