ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship within the natural world. It begins by focusing on rights and how the enjoyment of these rights can affect others; in other words, global interdependency. Pupils learn about the citizenship aspects of sustainable development, including energy resources, waste disposal, transport, global, national and local targets. Pupils find out about the issues involved in sustainable farming and current debates such as animal transport. They find out about global famine and obesity, including the impact of fast food on our culture. The chapter also investigates how the design of the built environment enables access for disabled people. There are opportunities throughout to explore conflict resolution within a global and environmental perspective.
