ABSTRACT

We abstracted the IBL philosophy and methodology out of books and journals and built from them and our experience, the multitude of physical processes and procedures that make up the functionality of an integrated whole curriculum – a curriculum that was going to be used by hundreds of staff and thousands of students in the real world. A truly awesome task, both in prospect and subsequently in actual practice. Fortunately, there is a set of tried and tested tools and techniques available for use in implementing large-scale and complex systems that greatly increase the likelihood of a successful outcome, namely, project management – an approach which ‘provides structure, focus, flexibility and control in the pursuit of results’ (Bruce and Langdon 2000: 6).
