Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras to enable persons to see for themselves the realities of that part of the hemisphere, realities quite different from what was being presented in the US media . . . More than 600 persons participated in [these] and . . . returned home with a new sense of solidarity with the people of that region, as well as a new understanding of the political realities . . . [W]hile efforts at persuading tour operators to be more sensitive toward the environment and the peoples they are visiting are all important, it is more important that increasing numbers of tourists have a chance, as part of their travel experience, to come to a real understanding of the social, economic, political, environmental realities of the places they are visiting so that they can become part of the solution to the environmental problems.
