ABSTRACT

When Jack's mother finds they have no money left for food, she has no choice but to ask Jack to sell their cow. He must get as much as he can for it because they desperately need the money. Jack faces a dilemma when he is offered magic beans rather than money for the cow. Perhaps the beans will bring good luck. But he knows how desperate his mother is for money for food this very day. He decides to take the beans. When the beanstalk grows, Jack climbs up to see the giant sleeping beside a pile of golden eggs. His attempt to creep up and retrieve the eggs fails when the giant wakes and booms that the boy is a wicked thief. He asks the children what he should do with Jack. How should the giant punish him for trying to steal?
