ABSTRACT

We have hinted at rather than directly approached the complex issue of qualitative data analysis so far. Whilst we have discussed data analysis as a stage in the research process and looked at the ways in which researchers have analysed their data and offered explanations, the mechanics and nature of qualitative data analysis have not been faced head on. We will remedy that in this chapter by drawing together what has been said about analysis so far and offering the reader an appreciation of the very different nature of qualitative data analysis, with some ‘hands on’ practical advice. It is important, therefore, to be clear about the ways in which the assumptions of qualitative research approaches influence data analysis, the nature of qualitative data analysis and the role of theory and concepts. Styles of qualitative data analysis, such as conversational analysis, thematic analysis and phenomenological analysis are explored, and, finally, the issues involved in looking at visual data are considered. The basic questions concern how it is possible to draw valid meaning from qualitative data. This leads on to an appreciation of the role of theory and concepts in qualitative data analysis.
