ABSTRACT

The Greek text translated is from the edition of J.Ziegler, Sapientia Iesu Filii Sirach, Septuaginta XII/2 (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht: Göttingen, 1965). In 50:1, some witnesses read ‘sketched in outline’ for ‘patched up’, and ‘people’ for ‘Temple’, correspondingly weakening Simon’s association with building activity. In 50:2, many witnesses read some form of the word ‘double’, which features as diplês in the edition of A.Rahlfs, Septuaginta, vol. 2 (Württembergische Bibelanstalt: Stuttgart, 1935), to yield ‘…the foundation of the height of the double wall’. In 50:3, some witnesses read hupodochia for apodocheion, ‘reservoir’: the former is similar to the hupodocheion, ‘reservoir’, spoken of in Aristeas 89.
