ABSTRACT

Interactive cinema is a direct descendent of the movies, one of the contemporary world's most beloved forms of entertainment. The film that is regarded as the world's first large-screen interactive movie was shown at the Montreal World's Fair in 1967. While participating in an Immersion Studios film, audience members were called upon to interact with each other, sometimes by competing and sometimes by collaborating. Examples of small-screen interactive movies are somewhat easier to find than their larger relatives, but they are by no means abundant, even though most people have the hardware necessary to play them. Hyperstory is a term used by filmmaker Margi Szperling to describe the works of iCinema she produces. In some cases, the events or the outcome of an iCinema story are controlled by users on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter). As in this chapter, the field of iCinema may be small, but the work that is being produced here is dynamic and innovative.
