ABSTRACT

Social media online communities that exist to let people share news, opinions, personal information, photos, and videos are a relatively new phenomena. The upstart social media sites have surprisingly powerful muscle power. Social media sites can be an excellent way to amplify a characters personality or show shades of that person that might not be revealed by other forms of media. My Darklyng, co-written in 2010 by Lauren Merchling and Laura Moser, was one of the first works of social media fiction. One early work of social media fiction was the retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet, written entirely in Facebook posts. Social media games, also called social games, are games that one play on social media sites with their community of friends. Although using social media to tell stories is still a relatively new development, these narratives have already demonstrated that they can be used to portray characters and be the bones of both fictional and non-fiction stories.
