ABSTRACT
Until recently, in both Catholic and Protestant countries, unbaptized infants, together with stillbirths and miscarriages, were refused funerary rites and could not be laid in consecrated ground, since they were deemed not to be part of the Christian community, and unable to enter heaven, though not deserving of hell.
