ABSTRACT
Learning to spell cannot follow a completely phonic programme. Children need spellings right from the beginning that are either exceptions to general rules (e.g. they, people) or follow complex rules (knew, brought). It is advisable for children to learn these words as soon as they begin to make much use of them, since they will otherwise be in danger of consolidating wrong spellings.
