ABSTRACT
The jack (sometimes called the "ESCAPEMENT" or "hopper") is the part of the piano ACTION that, when lifted by the KEY, propels the HAMMER to the STRING. The jack, as originally designed by CRISTOFORI, allowed the hammer to rebound from the string immediately after striking it regardless of how quickly the pianist released the key. The principle of the jack remains unchanged today.
