ABSTRACT

The inventive French piano maker, Jean-Henri (Johann Heinrich) Pape, was born in Sarstedt, near Hanover, 1 July 1789, and died in Asnires, near Paris, 2 February 1875. Like so many instrument builders of his day, Pape came to Paris (1811) to work in the new piano factory of Ignace PLEYEL (1757-1831). By 1815 he had established his own piano workshop. At that time there were less than thirty piano makers in all of France.
