ABSTRACT

Anton Walter was born in Neuhausen an der Fildern/ Swabia in south Germany (5 February 1752) and died in Vienna (11 April 1826). Though baptized Gabriel Anton, Walter apparently never used the name Gabriel and always signed his name as Anton Walter. His father was a carpenter and ludimagister (organist), his mother was of Italian origin. Anton Walter probably came to Vienna already trained as a piano builder in 1774, settled in one of the suburbs, and quickly won a name for himself as an instrument restorer. In January 1780 he married the widow of Franz SCHOFSTOSS, Anna Elisabeth, ne Reisinger (1748-1818). In February 1781 he was called to castle Esterhza, where he stayed for twelve days repairing the castle's keyboard instruments, for which he received twenty-four Gulden.
