ABSTRACT

Yamaha is a major Japanese piano manufacturer with headquarters in Hamamatsu. Torakusu Yamaha (1851-1916), founder, began building reed organs in 1887. In 1889 the firm was incorporated under the name Nippon Gakki Company. Torakusu Yamaha served as president until his death. In 1899, before beginning piano manufacturing, Yamaha traveled to the United States, researching the current technology. The company produced its first UPRIGHT PIANO in 1900 and its first GRAND PIANO in 1902. In 1987 the corporate name was changed to Yamaha Corporation.
