ABSTRACT

Hugh Le Caine invented the voltage-controlled synthesizer in 1945 but was never able to successfully market one as a commercial product. That distinction goes to American engineer Robert Moog, whose finely crafted solid-state synthesizer modules, introduced during the mid-’60s, were the first to be sold with any success. His instruments are classics in the same way as the Hammond organ and Rhodes electric piano. Moog synthesizers represent the gold standard of the electronic music industry.
