ABSTRACT

Yet another important influence upon human geography in recent years has been the influence of cultural studies. This trend has become widely known as the ‘cultural turn’ and is also sometimes referred to as the ‘linguistic turn’. Although this trend has so far had relatively little impact upon study of the changing geography of the welfare state, it is almost certain to have a big impact in the future. This chapter therefore examines the basic elements of the cultural turn and considers how they can be utilised in studying the geographies of welfare services.
