ABSTRACT

The contrasting views on welfare of Doyal and Gough (1991), Harvey (1992) and Bennett (1989) are all worth deliberating on in the context of this chapter. In addition, the work of Young (1990) is quite crucial in any consideration of the future of welfare. Smith (1994) provides an excellent overview of the concept of social justice (see also Hay, 1995). Hutton (1995) provides a thought-provoking commentary on many of the issues considered in this chapter. Hutton’s book has already proved to be a ‘classic’ and may have an important impact upon future developments. It is also worth examining Mulgan (1994) and the readings in Oakley and Williams (1994).
