ABSTRACT

There are literally hundreds of books on welfare states. The following are just a few of the useful introductions to recent changes in welfare structures: Cochrane and Clarke (1993), Glennerster (1995), Mishra (1984), Pierson (1991) and Williams (1989). It is also worth seeking out Esping-Anderson’s (1990) influential work. Johnston (1993) provides an extremely clear summary of the pressures upon welfare states. The classic New Right text is Hayek (1956). Offe (1984) is a good example of a recent neo-Marxian interpretation of the problems of the welfare state.
