ABSTRACT
The world is confronted with a number of very serious environmental problems. Some of them have been with us for a long time (e.g. soil pollution), others have only cropped up since the middle of the last century (e.g. climate change). Some of them are of a local character, others have a global dimension. Coping with the latter is a matter of great complexity.
