ABSTRACT

Looking back from our present vantage point, no longer harassed by the rigours of disputation and the tyranny of documentation, we ask ourselves two questions. What have we said? And have we said it successfully? Not all the matters discussed can be incorporated in our answer, but an overview of some of the highlights will present a fitting panorama of the breadth and sweep of women’s historic role in Roman public life. Two themes will be covered: the politics of protest and the rise of the great political matron.
