ABSTRACT

The major goal of this book is to facilitate the incorporation by therapists of the experiences of successful equal partners into work with couples. Rather than attempting to categorize couples into groups (i.e. equal partner or traditional) it is clinically more helpful to assess each couple according to the major themes identified. We can take note of which were happier and those less happy, in order to help understand the process of achieving both equality and happiness in marriage. The material here is translated into therapeutic goals. Where relevant, case information from couples in therapy will also be presented to highlight how these themes are reflected in the problems that couples bring into relationship counseling. Later chapters will then show how actually to incorporate these themes in work towards change.1
