ABSTRACT

We found Nang Suu sitting on the lower floor of her not yet completed home, which is being built in stages as the money becomes available. It’s a hot day and she is resting during the intensity of the midday heat. At 30, Nang Suu is the same age as I am. She is married to Aa Et and they have three sons, aged 15, 12 and 7. They live together with her mother and an orphaned nephew. They are rice farmers with 20 rai of farmland (1 rai equals 0.16 h.a.). Her eldest son has left school and makes a little extra income from caring for cattle. About four months before this interview she had an abortion. She was two months pregnant. She has used contraceptive pills for seven years since the birth of her last son.
