ABSTRACT
In this chapter and Chapter 10, we discuss the question of language variety and translation. By way of introduction to the notion of language variety, here is a text from Steiler Zahn und Zickendraht. Das Wörterbuch der Teenager-und Twensprache. It consists in a pastiche of a dialogue between two 1960s German teenagers and its intralingual translation into rather formal standard German. This text can be used as a point of reference for both Practicals 9 and 10, and would repay some discussion in class.
