ABSTRACT
The following four chapters will deal with a selection of topics from the ‘contrastive linguistics’ of German and English. While each of these chapters is self-contained, and can be used as the basis of a practical at whatever stage of the course it seems most useful, there is clearly a close link between Chapters 16 and 17, both of which concentrate on the topic of modal particles.
