ABSTRACT

In Chapters (5)–(16) of this book further data will be provided on the production and consumption of various goods and services for specific regions, this section being intended as an introduction to some of the outstanding examples of global disparities. Chapter 4 contains an overview of the ‘development gap’, summarising the variability in demographic features, natural resource endowment, and production and consumption levels discussed in this chapter with reference to the larger countries of the world. Transactions between the regions of the world are then considered with special reference to trade, transnational companies and development assistance. Finally the impact on the natural and human environment of the rapid increase in population and production in the world is considered.
