ABSTRACT
For the purposes of this book, Japan and the Republic of Korea (hereafter South Korea) are treated together because environmentally and economically they have much in common. On account of its ambivalent position internationally and its strong cultural links with Communist China, Taiwan is grouped with China and discussed in Chapter 16, although in many ways it resembles South Korea.
