ABSTRACT

The influence of the USA seems likely to increase, at least for a time, and its various transactions with foreign countries, including trade, investment, and development assistance, will grow. The ‘policekeeping’ role of the USA in the world, whether conforming to the policy of the UN, or in its own interests, ensures that the US presence is felt very widely round the world. Even the former Soviet bloc and China, with which friendly contacts before the 1990s were sporadic, are now increasingly influenced by US policy.
