ABSTRACT

Areas (MSAs) and eighteen Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSAs). The eighteen CMSAs are themselves made up of groupings of Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs). For example ‘Greater’ New York consists of fifteen PMSAs, and extends beyond the State of New York into New Jersey, Connecticut and a corner of Pennsylvania. In 1991 New York itself (the five boroughs) had only 8.6 million (44 per cent) out of the total CMSA population of 19.6 million. Most of the eighteen CMSAs of the USA comprise only two or three PMSAs.
