ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationships between the urban environmental crisis and the role of the telecommunications sector. The links between the physical environmental problems caused by modern urban life and the burgeoning interest in the role of telecommunications in cities remain curiously disconnected debates (Marvin, 1994). While researchers and policy-makers are developing a greater understanding of the role of telecommunications in many aspects of urban life, they have little insight into the environmental role of telecommunications in cities (Cramer and Zegveld, 1991).
