ABSTRACT

The best sources on the globalisation of urban culture are the books by Bird et al. (1993), Knox (1993), Featherstone (1990), Lash and Urry (1994), Watson and Gibson (1995) and Amin (1994). The journals Theory, Culture and Society and Media, Culture and Society also explore these relationships. On the unevenness of access to technologies the best work is by Peter Golding and Graham Murdock (Golding, 1990; Golding and Murdock, 1986; Murdock and Golding, 1989). More general approaches to telematics and social development are collected in Featherstone (1990). The two books by Miles (1988) and van Rijn and Williams (1988) provide the best treatments yet of general home telematics issues. Silverstone et al. (1992) look at technologies within households.
