ABSTRACT
Theoretical models of settlement must be approached with imagination, for they can only be appreciated and understood if they are keyed into specific examples drawn from reality. The substance of this chapter deals with varied contexts within which settlement forms and patterns can be explained, but the problems involved can be illustrated using three maps of national distributions presented in Figures 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3.
