ABSTRACT

The experiences of female Somali transnational migrants outside the national boundaries of Somalia, and up until their arrival within Malta’s national boundaries, are the focus of this chapter. Defined in this book as ‘transit’, this journey may take days, months or even years. The women interviewed for this book, after successfully arriving in Malta, form part of a much larger population who have fled Somalia as a result of protracted humanitarian crises over many decades. In fact, in 2004, it was estimated that almost a quarter of all Somalis at the time lived outside their country of origin (Al-Sharmani 2006).
