ABSTRACT
I MY task is now to show how the concept oftragic thought enables us to see the fragments which make up the Pensees as having a coherent unity. I shall not do this by studying each fragment individually, but shall choose a certain number in order to illustrate my general method. The reader will then be able to see for himself whether the other fragments fit into my general pattern or not.
