ABSTRACT

The notion of ‘home’ brings together key themes of this book. It has specific resonance for migrant women who are simultaneously linked to a homeland of origin and to settled homes at places of destination. Ways in which ties to these connected but contrasting places are represented discursively and negotiated materially are central to diasporic identities. Homes imply places of belonging at different scales, from the global to the local. Some aspects of belonging are actively chosen by women to express their feelings of identity, but others are imposed on them by constructions of their gendered positionings in society.
