ABSTRACT

The study involved interviewing 22 children and separately interviewing their mothers. In both cases a standardised semi-structured interview schedule was used. Madge and Fassam (1982) used a similar methodology to learn about the lives of physically disabled children and made the following comment on their use of a direct interview technique: ‘First of all we found that valuable information on the attitudes, experiences and needs of physically disabled children can be gained from asking direct questions.’
