ABSTRACT

By the time the children in this sample had been through infant school all the mothers, bar one, felt that something was definitely wrong. The next series of questions looked at the process, from their point of view, by which their child was identified as having dyslexia or specific learning difficulties. Questions were asked about who first suggested that the child was dyslexic or had a specific learning difficulty and what the response to this suggestion was. Mothers were also asked how they came to find out about dyslexia and how they felt when their child was identified as having dyslexia or a specific learning difficulty. In response to the question, ‘Who was it that first suggested that the child might be dyslexic?’, the following responses were given.
