ABSTRACT
The last three chapters have indicated in outline what is now known of the past record of climate and what more, given further research, we may hope to reconstruct. Further details of present knowledge will be mentioned at appropriate points in this and later chapters. Let us now look at the everchanging scene of climate and environment as the stage on which the history of mankind has been played.
