ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will look at the general nature of cognitivebehavioural approaches to problem behaviours. We begin with a short introduction to the history of these approaches and some of the founding principles of both behavioural and cognitive psychology, and the relevance of these to modifying behaviour. This is followed by a general review of cognitive-behavioural assessment and how this can be structured. Finally, we look at some of the general considerations involved in modifying behaviour in this way.
