ABSTRACT
Military forces can pursue many missions, including peacekeeping, nation-building, and humanitarian assistance functions. But their distinguishing characteristic is that they are armed and have the capacity to fi ght. Military historians use various terms and concepts to discuss war. This section presents a brief overview of the more common ones and some important concepts that will help readers understand American military history. These terms and concepts will appear throughout this textbook.
